Dog playing on the beach

Southwest Florida is a paradise for dog lovers, offering several beautiful beaches and parks where you can enjoy the sun and surf with your four-legged best friend. From off-leash havens to scenic spots for a leashed stroll, here is a guide to the best dog-friendly beach spots in the region.

Lee County Area (Fort Myers, Bonita Springs)

1. Dog Beach Park (Bonita Beach Dog Beach)

This is arguably the most famous dog beach in Southwest Florida and a truly unique experience.

  • Location/City: 8800 Estero Blvd, Bonita Springs, FL 34134 (Located just south of Lovers Key State Park, north of Naples).
  • Hours of Operation: Generally Sunrise to Sunset (Open 7 days a week).
  • Special Option: This is the region’s only off-leash coastal beach area! Dogs can run free in a beautiful, shallow tidal area.
  • Restrictions:
    • Owners are responsible for their dogs’ control and cleanup.
    • No glass containers or alcohol.
    • No sick, aggressive, or female dogs in heat.
    • Minimal amenities: Portable toilets are typically provided, but a dog rinse-off shower station is available. Pack plenty of water for yourself and your dog.

2. Causeway Islands Park (Sanibel/Fort Myers)

The Causeway Islands connecting the mainland to Sanibel Island are a great spot for on-leash beach time.

  • Location/City: Sanibel Causeway Islands (Islands A and B), Fort Myers, FL.
  • Hours of Operation: Generally Open 24 hours.
  • Special Option: Offers great views and calm water for a gentle dip. There is a toll to cross the causeway.
  • Restrictions: Dogs must be on a leash (typically 6-8 feet max) at all times. Owners must clean up after their pets.

3. Fort Myers Beach and Other Lee County Beaches

While Dog Beach Park is the dedicated off-leash area, many other Lee County beaches allow leashed dogs.

  • Location/City: Fort Myers Beach, various beach access points in Lee County.
  • Restrictions: Dogs are generally permitted on many Lee County beaches, but they must be on a non-retractable leash no longer than six feet in length. Dogs are typically not allowed in designated swimming or nesting areas (for wildlife).

Collier County Area (Naples, Marco Island)

4. Keewaydin Island

This unbridged barrier island south of Naples is a favorite for boaters and their furry companions.

  • Location/City: Keewaydin Island, Naples, FL (Accessible only by boat or water taxi/shuttle).
  • Hours of Operation: Generally Dawn to Dusk.
  • Special Option: A pristine 8-mile barrier island that feels truly remote. The Hemingway Water Shuttle is typically pet-friendly.
  • Restrictions: Dogs are allowed on the beach but must be kept on a leash at all times. There are no facilities on the island (no restrooms, water fountains, etc.)—you must bring all your own supplies.

Sarasota County Area (Venice)

5. Brohard Paw Park and Dog Beach

The only beach in Sarasota County where dogs are explicitly allowed.

  • Location/City: 1600 Harbor Drive S, Venice, FL 34285.
  • Hours of Operation: 7:00 a.m. until Dusk daily.
  • Special Option: This park features a fenced-in, off-leash dog park that leads directly to a beach area where dogs are also permitted! It’s an excellent combination of play yard and beach access.
  • Restrictions: Dogs must be on-leash in the parking lot and on the boardwalk but can be off-leash in the fenced-in park and on the designated beach area. Amenities include dog wash stations, drinking fountains for dogs, and litter receptacles.

Important Reminders for All Dog Beach Visits

  • Leash Laws: Always respect posted signs. Even where off-leash is allowed, you must have a leash readily available and keep your dog leashed until you reach the designated area.
  • Cleanup: Bring plenty of waste bags! Picking up after your dog is the single most important rule to keep these areas open and enjoyable for everyone.
  • Hydration: Southwest Florida can get very hot. Bring fresh, cool water for both you and your dog.
  • Licensing: Ensure your dog is currently licensed and has a rabies tag.
  • Safety: Do not allow your dog to harass wildlife (birds, sea turtles, etc.). Observe all posted warnings about nesting areas.

Enjoy your beach day with your favorite canine companion!
